Wiring Instructions

Before you start

The Pioneer DMH-1700NEX receiver is only for 12 V negative-ground vehicles whose ignition switch has an ACC position. If your vehicle has no ACC wire or circuitry, do not install it. The unit is designed for professional installation. If you are not comfortable removing dash trim, working near airbags or identifying vehicle circuits, have a trained mobile-electronics installer do the job. A car audio install like this does not normally need a permit, but follow your vehicle maker's instructions for trim removal and airbag areas.

Pick the diagram tab that matches your installation. For a basic install that drives the speakers from the built-in amplifier, use Power and Speakers. Add Power amp if external amplifiers or a subwoofer amp take the RCA outputs. In Camera and video, choose Rear camera for a backup camera, or AV video and rear display for an external video source or a rear-seat screen. Complete shows everything at once.

  • Tools: wire stripper, crimper or soldering iron, insulated butt connectors or heat-shrink, electrical tape, cable clamps, a digital multimeter and a test light.
  • Harness: a vehicle-specific harness adapter and dash kit let you connect without cutting factory wiring. Check with your parts supplier for the right ones for your vehicle.
  • Wire gauge: the unit's leads come at the correct size. Do not shorten them, because the protection circuits (fuse holder, fuse resistor, filter) are built into the leads. If you extend a lead, use wire at least as heavy as the original.
  • Speakers: 4 to 8 Ω, rated above 50 W maximum input.

Disconnect the negative (–) battery cable before you make any connection.

Step-by-step wiring

  1. Choose the mounting spot. It must not block the driver's view, sit in an airbag deployment zone, or be near a heater vent. Mount the unit horizontally, within 0 to 60 degrees, and leave about 5 cm of clear space behind it for heat.
  2. Connect the Black ground first, to clean bare metal on the vehicle body, and tighten it firmly. Give any power amp its own ground under a different screw.
  3. Connect Yellow to a terminal that is live at all times. Do not run it straight to the battery terminal: engine vibration can wear through its insulation where it passes the firewall.
  4. Connect Red to the switched ACC terminal.
  5. Connect Orange/white to the lighting switch terminal.
  6. Connect Light green to the power supply side of the parking brake switch, never the ground side, and never bypass it.
  7. Of the two backup lamp wires, connect Violet/white to the one whose voltage changes in REVERSE (R).
  8. Wire the speakers pair by pair, keeping + to + and − to − on every speaker. With a two-speaker system, connect nothing to the unused speaker leads.
  9. For external amps, run RCA cables from FRONT OUT, REAR OUT and SUB OUT, and connect Blue/white to each amp's system remote terminal. The total load on Blue/white must not exceed 300 mA. Connect Yellow/black only if you have equipment with a mute lead. Otherwise leave it unconnected.
  10. For a camera, run an RCA cable from the camera's video output to the Brown input. Use a reverse or mirror-image rear view camera only. For video, connect the external component to AUX IN with a mini-jack AV cable, and the rear display to REAR MON.
  11. Plug in the antenna, the SiriusXM tuner (with the supplied SiriusXM cable), the steering wheel remote adapter and the USB cable. Connect the microphone with the unit off (ACC OFF). Mount it on the sun visor in the up position, or on the steering column away from the wheel.
  12. Tape every unused lead. Secure the wiring with clamps or tape, away from the steering column, shift lever, pedals, seat tracks, doors and hot surfaces.

Testing and start-up

Test everything before you mount the unit for good. Reconnect the battery, then use the multimeter at the harness: Yellow should read about 12 V with the key off, Red 0 V with the key off and 12 V at ACC, and Violet/white about 12 V only in R. Turn the ignition off and press RESET with a pen tip before first use.

  • At ACC the unit should power up and the amps should turn on with it. Both should shut off with the key.
  • Use Fader/Balance to check each speaker on its own. On a two-speaker system, set Front and Rear to 0.
  • If you use SUB OUT, turn on Subwoofer in the Cutoff setting.
  • With a camera, turn on Back-up Camera Input and confirm the camera image appears as soon as you shift into R. Without a camera, leave the setting off.
  • Apply the parking brake and confirm video from AUX or USB is allowed.
  • Tune SiriusXM Channel 1 to confirm the tuner works.

Then mount the unit to the factory bracket using only the supplied screws.

Safety notes

  • The unit is rated 14.4 V DC (10.8 V to 15.1 V allowable), draws up to 10.0 A and is protected by a 10 A fuse. Replace the fuse only with one of the same rating.
  • Never cut into the unit's power lead to feed other devices. The lead will overheat.
  • Uncovered speaker leads can short the amplifier. Insulate every one you don't use.
  • If the vehicle has a factory backup camera that meets current regulations, do not disable it. Connecting it requires an adaptor.
  • Never place a rear display where the driver can see it. Never open the unit: there are high-voltage parts inside.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Probable Cause What to Check
The unit won't turn on at all Loose ground, no voltage on Yellow or Red, or a blown fuse Measure about 12 V from Yellow to ground at all times and from Red to ground at ACC. Check continuity from Black to bare body metal, and check the 10 A fuse.
Clock and presets are lost every time I turn the key off Yellow is connected to a switched circuit instead of constant 12 V With the key off, Yellow must still read about 12 V. If it reads 0 V, move it to a constant 12 V terminal.
The radio stays on with the key out, or the battery goes flat Red is on a constant 12 V circuit, or Red and Yellow are swapped With the key off, Red must read 0 V. Move it to a terminal that is live only at ACC.
A caution message covers the screen and video won't play while I'm parked Light green is not connected, is on the ground side of the brake switch, or the interlock was triggered Make sure Light green is on the power supply side of the parking brake switch. Then apply the parking brake, release it, and apply it again, holding the brake pedal down.
No camera picture when I shift into reverse Back-up Camera Input is off, the Brown RCA is loose, or Violet/white is on the wrong backup lamp wire Turn Back-up Camera Input on. Reseat the camera RCA in the Brown input. Confirm Violet/white goes to the wire that reads about 12 V only in R.
Black screen in reverse, and I have no camera Back-up Camera Input is set to on Turn Back-up Camera Input off in the camera settings.
Thin sound with weak bass, even though every speaker plays Reversed polarity on one or more speakers Check each pair: White, Gray, Green and Violet go to +, and the black-striped wire of each pair goes to −.
A speaker is silent, or the volume won't go up Speaker lead or RCA cable not connected properly Use Fader/Balance to find the silent channel. Check that lead pair for a loose crimp, and with the power off check its continuity to the speaker. Reseat the RCA plugs if you use amps.
Caution! AMP Overload appears Shorted speaker lead, bare strands touching metal, or speakers below 4 Ω Insulate the leads, check that no speaker wire touches the chassis, and confirm each speaker is 4 to 8 Ω. Then turn ACC off for at least 9 seconds and back on.
My external amplifier doesn't turn on Blue/white not connected, or overloaded by too many devices At ACC, measure about 12 V on Blue/white at the amp's remote terminal. Keep the total load at or under 300 mA.
The screen doesn't dim when I turn the headlights on Orange/white not connected to the lighting switch terminal, or Lighting Detect is off With the headlights on, measure voltage on Orange/white. Turn on Lighting Detect in Display Settings.
Check Antenna or Check Tuner appears Antenna plug not seated, or the SiriusXM tuner cable is loose or not the supplied one Reseat the antenna plug in the antenna jack. Reconnect the SiriusXM tuner with the supplied cable and check battery voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I install this receiver in a vehicle without an ACC ignition position?
No. The unit needs a switched ACC circuit to turn on and off with the ignition, and it must not be installed in a vehicle without an ACC wire or circuitry. Without ACC there is no correct place for the Red lead. Wiring Red to constant power would keep the unit on and drain the battery. Wiring it to a circuit that only goes live with the engine running gives unreliable start-up. Vehicles with a push-button start usually still have an accessory mode. Confirm it with a meter before you buy.

What speakers can I use with the built-in amplifier?
Use speakers rated 4 to 8 Ω and above 50 W maximum input power when all four channels are in use. Never use 1 to 3 Ω speakers, because the low load can overload the amplifier. The built-in amp is rated 14 W RMS × 4 into 4 Ω under CTA2006, with 22 W × 4 continuous and 50 W × 4 maximum. Most factory and aftermarket coaxial speakers are 4 Ω and work well. Dual-voice-coil subwoofers need an external amplifier.

Can I run the yellow wire directly to the battery?
No. Do not connect the Yellow lead straight to the battery. Engine vibration can wear through its insulation where it passes from the cabin into the engine bay, and if it touches metal it can short with considerable danger. Connect Yellow to a constant 12 V terminal inside the cabin instead, usually the memory or battery wire of the factory radio harness. A harness adapter makes this easy. Yellow should read about 12 V at all times, with the key on or off.

Do I have to connect the parking brake wire?
Yes, if you want video from AUX or USB, or access to some settings. The Light green lead tells the unit when the vehicle is parked and must go to the power supply side of the parking brake switch. If it is not connected, video stays blocked behind a caution message. Grounding, bypassing or tampering with this lead may break the law and can cause serious injury. Video is not meant to be visible to the driver while driving.

Can I connect any camera to the brown input?
No. The Brown input is only for a reverse or mirror-image rear view camera, and nothing else should be connected to it. A camera that outputs a normal image may appear reversed on screen. If your vehicle has a factory backup camera that meets U.S. or Canadian rear visibility rules, the Pioneer receiver must display that same view. That requires an adaptor sold separately, and not every vehicle can be connected. A professional installer can confirm the options for your vehicle.

Can the blue/white wire power my amplifier?
No. Blue/white is only a turn-on signal: it supplies 12 V at a maximum of 300 mA when the ignition is at ACC, even if the audio source is off. It goes to the amp's system remote terminal, an auto-antenna relay or an antenna booster. The amplifier's main power must come from its own fused supply, wired as its manual specifies. Ground the amp separately from the receiver, using a different screw on the vehicle body.

If I use external amplifiers, do I still connect the speaker leads?
No. When your amplifiers drive the speakers from the RCA outputs, those speaker leads are not used and should be taped off individually. The FRONT OUT, REAR OUT and SUB OUT jacks give up to 2.0 V of preout level. If you use SUB OUT, turn on the Subwoofer option in the Cutoff audio settings. The Subwoofer speaker level and low-pass filter only become available once it is on.

What is the yellow/black mute wire for?
Yellow/black is an audio mute input for equipment that has a mute function. If you have such a device, connect this lead to that device's audio mute lead. If you don't, leave it unconnected and insulate the bare end with tape. It is not a ground, a power lead or a turn-on lead, so never connect it to the vehicle body or to 12 V.

What fuse does the receiver use?
The unit is protected by a 10 A fuse in its power supply wiring. If you replace it, use only a fuse of the rating marked on the product. A larger fuse removes protection and can let a short overheat the wiring. Do not shorten the leads, because the fuse holder and other protection parts are built into them. The receiver draws up to 10.0 A and runs on 14.4 V DC nominal, 10.8 V to 15.1 V allowable.

Can I use a longer or different USB cable for my phone?
Yes, within limits. Plug your phone's cable into the supplied 1.5 m USB cable. Under the USB cable standard, a USB A to micro USB B cable must not exceed 2 m, and a USB A to USB C cable must not exceed 4 m. iPhones need a Lightning USB interface cable. USB hubs are not supported. The port supplies up to 1.5 A, so a heavily used phone may charge slowly or not at all.
