Wiring Instructions

Before you start

The Pioneer AVH-X2800BS receiver is only for a 12 V negative-ground vehicle whose ignition switch has an ACC position. If your vehicle has no ACC wire or circuit, do not install it. Pioneer designs this unit for professional installation. If you are not comfortable working on vehicle electrical systems, airbag areas or dash trim, have a qualified mobile electronics installer do it. Ask your dealer before drilling holes or modifying the vehicle.

  • Tools and materials: wire strippers, crimp tool and insulated butt connectors (or a vehicle-specific harness adapter), a digital multimeter, electrical tape, cable clamps, and the screws supplied with the unit.
  • Wire gauge: no gauge is specified for the extension wires. Splice onto the supplied leads with wire at least as heavy as each lead. Never shorten the receiver's own leads, because that can stop the protection circuit (fuse holder, fuse resistor, filter) from working properly.
  • Power isolation: disconnect the battery negative (–) cable before you start. Disconnecting the yellow lead or the battery erases some stored settings.
  • Accessories: work out which optional parts you are adding, such as the rear camera, amplifiers, SiriusXM tuner, iPhone or Android cable, external video component or rear display. Then use the matching tab of the diagram: Power, Speakers (pick the variant for your speaker or subwoofer layout), Power amp (Without internal amp or With internal amp) and Camera and video.

Step-by-step wiring

  1. Ground first. Connect the Black: ground lead to clean, bare metal on the vehicle body. If you also fit an external amplifier or other device, give each its own ground screw. Never share one screw.
  2. Find the constant and switched 12 V feeds. With the battery temporarily reconnected and the meter on DC volts, find a terminal that reads about 12 V in every key position for Yellow: battery +. Then find one that reads 12 V only in ACC/ON for Red: ACC (switched 12 V). Disconnect the battery again before you splice. Do not run the yellow lead straight to the battery: engine vibration can wear through its insulation where it passes into the engine compartment and short it.
  3. Connect the signal leads. Orange/white: illumination goes to the lighting switch terminal. Light green: parking brake goes to the power supply side of the parking brake switch, never the ground side. Violet/white: reverse signal goes to the backup lamp lead whose voltage changes when you shift into REVERSE (R).
  4. Connect the control leads. Run Blue/white: system remote to the amplifier remote terminal, auto-antenna relay or antenna booster, with a total load of no more than 300 mA. Connect Yellow/black: audio mute only if you have equipment with a mute function. Otherwise tape it.
  5. Connect the speakers. Wire FL, FR, RL and RR with the plain color to + and the color/black stripe to –. Use speakers rated over 50 W and 4 to 8 Ω. If you put a subwoofer on the rear leads without an amp, follow the Speakers tab variant that matches it. A 2 Ω subwoofer goes on violet and violet/black only, with nothing on green.
  6. Connect amplifiers, if fitted. Run RCA cables from FRONT OUT, REAR OUT and SUB OUT. In the Without internal amp layout, the speaker leads are not used, so tape them all.
  7. Connect the camera and video. Plug only a rear view camera into Brown: rear view camera input (R.C IN). Connect external video to AUX or to V IN · R/L IN, and a rear-seat display to V OUT. Mount that display where the driver cannot see it.
  8. Connect the rest. Plug in the antenna (ANT), the MIC (connect it only with the unit off), the USB cable, SXM and Steering as needed.
  9. Insulate and route. Tape every unused lead, especially unused speaker leads. Clamp the wiring away from the steering column, shift lever, pedals, parking brake, seat tracks, doors and hot surfaces. Never tap the receiver's power lead to feed another product.

Testing and start-up

  • Before final mounting, make the connections temporarily, reconnect the battery and check that everything works.
  • Check the voltages: yellow should read about 12 V all the time, red only with ACC on, and blue/white about 12 V with ACC on. The unit is rated 14.4 V DC (10.8 to 15.1 V allowed) and draws up to 10.0 A, protected by a 10 A fuse.
  • Turn the ignition off and press RESET with a pen tip. Start the engine, choose the language, then choose the speaker mode: Standard Mode for front/rear (plus subwoofer) or Network Mode for a 3-way system. You can only change this later by restoring default settings.
  • If a subwoofer is on the rear leads, turn the source off and set "Rear Speaker Output" to "Subwoofer".
  • Play a source at low volume and check each speaker with fader and balance.
  • Set "Back Camera Input" to "On", then shift into REVERSE (R). The camera image should appear right away. Turn "AV Input" and "AUX Input" on if you use those inputs.
  • Mount the unit level, within 0 to 30 degrees, with about 5 cm of clear space behind it.

Safety notes

  • A 12 V system won't give you a dangerous shock, but a shorted constant-12 V lead can carry enough current to melt insulation and start a fire. Keep the battery disconnected while you splice.
  • When you replace the fuse, use only the rating printed on the unit.
  • Never bypass the parking brake lead. The interlock is a legal and safety requirement.
  • Never install the unit or its wiring where an airbag deploys, or where it blocks the driver's view or controls.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Probable Cause What to Check
The radio won't turn on at all No ACC feed, a blown 10 A fuse, or a poor ground With ACC on, measure the red lead to the black lead: you should see about 12 V. Check yellow the same way. Check the fuse, and redo the ground on clean bare metal.
It loses my presets and settings every time I turn off the car The yellow and red leads are swapped, or yellow is on a switched circuit With the key off, yellow should still read about 12 V and red should read 0 V. Move the leads to the correct terminals.
The radio stays on and drains the battery overnight Red is connected to a constant 12 V terminal With the key removed, measure the red lead. If it reads 12 V, move it to a terminal that is live only in ACC.
Video never plays and a caution message covers the screen The parking brake lead is not connected, or it is on the ground side of the switch Check that the light green lead is on the power supply side of the parking brake switch. Then apply the brake, release it with the brake pedal held down, and apply it again.
"AMP Error" appears, or there is no sound from the speakers A shorted or bare speaker lead, a speaker below 4 Ω, or a subwoofer on the wrong leads Check every speaker pair for shorts to each other and to the chassis. Tape unused leads. Confirm the impedance: 4 to 8 Ω, and a 2 Ω subwoofer only on violet and violet/black.
Thin bass and a hollow sound from one side or the whole car One speaker is wired with reversed polarity Check that each plain-color lead goes to + and each black-stripe lead goes to – at every speaker.
The subwoofer on the rear leads sounds like a normal speaker, or barely works The rear output setting was not changed Turn the source off and set "Rear Speaker Output" to "Subwoofer" in the Audio settings.
The amplifier won't turn on, or it pops loudly Blue/white is not connected, it is overloaded, or the amp shares a ground screw With ACC on, measure about 12 V on the blue/white lead. Keep the total load at 300 mA or less. Give the amp its own ground screw.
The camera image doesn't appear in reverse, or it shows up while I'm driving forward The reverse lead is missing, Back Camera Input is off, or the polarity setting is wrong Check that violet/white changes voltage in REVERSE (R). Set "Back Camera Input" to "On". If the image appears while driving forward, switch "Camera Polarity" between Battery and Ground.
The screen doesn't dim when I turn on the headlights The illumination lead is not connected Measure the orange/white lead: it should read voltage only when the lights are on. Connect it to the lighting switch terminal.
"Check Antenna" or "Check Tuner" shows on the SiriusXM source The SiriusXM tuner or its antenna is loose, or the supply voltage is low Reseat the SXM connector and the antenna cable. Check the battery voltage, then switch the engine off and on again.
A device won't charge, or I get "Check USB" A damaged or pinched USB cable, or the device draws too much current Inspect the USB cable along its route. The port supplies 1.0 A at most. Turn the ignition off and on, then connect a compliant device.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I install the AVH-X2800BS in a car without an ACC position on the ignition switch?
No. This receiver needs an ignition switch with an ACC (accessory) position, and you should not install it in a vehicle with no ACC wire or circuit. The red lead has to receive 12 V only when the key is in ACC or ON, so the unit turns off with the ignition. Without that switched feed, the unit stays on or never powers up properly and can drain the battery.

What speaker impedance and power rating can I use?
Use speakers rated over 50 W maximum input power with an impedance of 4 to 8 Ω. Never use 1 to 3 Ω speakers on the four main channels. The one exception is a single 2 Ω subwoofer on the violet and violet/black leads, with nothing on green. The built-in amplifier delivers up to 50 W × 4 into 4 Ω, or 50 W × 2 plus 70 W × 1 into 2 Ω for the subwoofer.

Can I connect a subwoofer without an external amplifier?
Yes. You can put a subwoofer on the rear speaker leads in place of the rear speakers. A single 4 Ω subwoofer can go on the green or violet pair, a 2 Ω subwoofer goes on violet only, and two 4 Ω subwoofers can share the rear leads as the diagram shows. Afterwards, set "Rear Speaker Output" to "Subwoofer". The subwoofer output is mono.

What is the difference between Standard Mode and Network Mode?
Standard Mode is for a front and rear speaker system, with or without subwoofers. Network Mode is for a 3-way system with high, mid and low range speakers, each fed by its own output. You choose the mode the first time you start the unit, and you can only change it by restoring the default settings. Never run a 3-way network speaker system in Standard Mode, because it can damage the speakers.

Do I still use the speaker leads when I add external amplifiers?
It depends on the layout. In the Without internal amp layout, all speakers run from external amplifiers fed by FRONT OUT, REAR OUT and SUB OUT, so the speaker leads are not used and should be taped. In the With internal amp layout, the speaker leads still drive the front and rear speakers, while an external amp on SUB OUT drives the subwoofer. The preout level is up to 4.0 V.

Can I power my amplifier's turn-on from the blue/white lead?
Yes. That is what the blue/white lead is for. It outputs 12 V DC whenever the ignition is in ACC, even if the audio source is turned off, and it can supply up to 300 mA in total. You can use it to switch an amplifier's remote terminal, an auto-antenna relay or an antenna booster. If several amplifiers draw more than that combined, use a relay.

Can I connect the yellow lead directly to the battery?
No. Connect the yellow lead to a constant 12 V terminal inside the vehicle, not straight to the battery post. A wire run directly to the battery passes from the cabin into the engine compartment, where engine vibration can wear through its insulation. If the bare wire then touches metal, it shorts with a real risk of fire. Use an existing fused constant-12 V circuit instead.

Why must the parking brake lead go to the power supply side of the switch?
The receiver uses the light green lead to tell whether the parking brake is set, and it blocks video and some touch functions until it is. The lead has to sit on the power supply side of the parking brake switch to read that status correctly. Bypassing or grounding this lead to defeat the interlock may break the law and put you at risk of serious injury.

Which cameras can I connect to the brown R.C IN input?
Connect only a rear view camera, such as the ND-BC8, to R.C IN. Do not use it for any other video equipment. A camera that outputs a mirror-reversed image is recommended, otherwise the picture may look reversed. Also connect the violet/white reverse lead so the screen switches automatically in REVERSE (R), and set "Back Camera Input" to "On".

Can I add a rear-seat screen to this receiver?
Yes. Connect a display with RCA input jacks to the yellow V OUT jack using an RCA cable. This output lets rear-seat passengers watch video. Mount the display where the driver cannot see it while driving. Some places restrict video viewing even by passengers, so check your local rules. JPEG still images are not shown on the rear display.

How do I connect an iPhone or Android phone by cable?
Use the supplied 1.5 m USB cable together with an interface cable sold separately. For an iPhone with a Lightning connector, use the CD-IU52. For an Android device, use the CD-MU200. Then select the matching device and connection method in "Smartphone Setup". Connections through a USB hub are not supported, and the USB port supplies up to 1.0 A.

What fuse does the AVH-X2800BS use?
The power cord has a 10 A fuse, and the unit's maximum current draw is 10.0 A. If you replace it, use only a fuse of the rating printed on the product, never a larger one. If a new fuse blows again, look for a short in the wiring, such as a bare speaker lead or a pinched power lead, before you power the unit up again.
