Wiring Instructions

Before you start

The Pioneer DMH-100BT is built for 12 V negative-ground vehicles that have an ACC (accessory) position on the ignition switch. If your vehicle has no ACC wire or circuit, do not install this unit. Pioneer designs this receiver for professional installation. If you are not comfortable working on vehicle electrical systems, airbag areas or factory backup-camera circuits, have a qualified mobile-electronics installer do the job.

Tools and materials you will need:

  • A digital multimeter or a 12 V test light, to find the constant, switched, illumination, reverse and parking brake leads in the vehicle
  • Wire strippers, a crimp tool and insulated butt connectors, or a vehicle-specific wiring harness adapter
  • Electrical tape and cable clamps
  • A spare fuse of the rating marked on the unit. The power supply uses a 10 A fuse.
  • Optional: RCA cables, a mini-jack AV cable, a USB cable (from the CD-MU200 or CD-CU50) and an ND-BC8 or similar rear view camera

The manual does not specify a wire gauge. As general good practice, any extension you add should be at least as heavy as the receiver's own leads. Never shorten the receiver's leads. Shortening them can stop the built-in protection circuit from working.

Disconnect the battery negative (–) cable before you begin, and leave it off until every connection is insulated.

Choose the right diagram tab

  • Speakers only, no amplifier: use the Power and Speakers tabs.
  • External amplifier that drives the speakers: on the Power amp tab, select Without internal amp. The speaker leads are not used in this setup.
  • Amplifier added alongside the receiver's own speaker outputs (for example, a subwoofer amp): select With internal amp. The front and rear speakers still play from the speaker leads.
  • Backup camera or external video player: use the Camera and video tab and select Rear camera or External video.

Step-by-step wiring

  1. Make a test fit first. Do all the wiring below with the unit out of the dash and confirm everything works before you mount it.
  2. Connect the Black: ground lead first, to clean, bare metal on the vehicle body. If you also install an external amplifier, ground it with a separate screw. Never share a ground screw between the receiver and the amp.
  3. Connect Yellow: battery + to a circuit that has 12 V at all times. Use the vehicle's radio harness or fuse block. Do not run it straight to the battery, because a lead passing through the firewall can chafe and short.
  4. Connect Red: ACC (switched 12 V) to a circuit that has 12 V only when the key is in ACC or ON. Check with your meter: Yellow must read about 12 V with the key off, and Red must read 0 V with the key off.
  5. Connect Orange/white: illumination to the lighting switch terminal, so the screen can dim with the headlights.
  6. Connect Light green: parking brake to the power supply side of the parking brake switch. Do not ground it and do not bypass it. This lead drives the video safety interlock.
  7. If you are installing a camera, connect Violet/white: reverse signal to whichever of the two backup lamp leads changes voltage when you shift into REVERSE (R).
  8. Connect the speakers: FL, FR, RL and RR. On each pair, the solid-color wire goes to + and the black-striped wire goes to –. Use 4 to 8 Ω speakers rated over 50 W. If you have only two speakers, connect nothing to the unused speaker leads and tape each one separately.
  9. For an amplifier, run RCA cables from FRONT OUT and/or REAR/SUB OUT to the amp. Then connect Blue/white: system remote to the amp's remote terminal. Its limit is 300 mA at 12 V DC.
  10. Connect the camera's RCA video lead to R.C IN. Power the camera from an ACC-switched circuit. Connect nothing else to R.C IN.
  11. For an external video component, use a genuine mini-jack AV cable on AUX: white is left audio, red is right audio and yellow is video. Other mini-jack cables can have a different pin order.
  12. Plug in the antenna at ANT. If you have one, connect the steering wheel interface at Steering.
  13. Insulate every unused lead with tape. Secure all wiring with clamps, away from the steering column, shift lever, pedals, seat tracks and hot surfaces.

Testing and start-up

  1. Reconnect the battery negative cable. With the ignition off, press RESET with a pen tip. You need to do this before the first use after installation.
  2. Turn the key to ACC. The language screen should appear. Turn the key off and back on to confirm the unit kept the clock and settings, which shows Yellow is on constant power.
  3. Use Fader/Balance to check that each speaker plays from the correct corner. If you have an amp, measure about 12 V on Blue/white with the key in ACC.
  4. Turn on the headlights and confirm the screen dims when Dimmer Trigger is set to Auto.
  5. For a camera: set Back Camera Input to On, then shift into REVERSE with your foot on the brake. The camera image should appear right away and disappear when you shift out. If it is reversed, change Camera Polarity.
  6. For an amp: set Preout to Rear or Subwoofer while the source is off.
  7. Once everything works, mount the unit. Leave about 5 cm (2 in.) of clear space behind the rear panel for ventilation.

Safety notes

  • The supply is 12 V DC, but a shorted Yellow lead can carry very high current. That is why you install the 10 A fuse and route the wiring carefully.
  • Never tap the receiver's power leads to feed other equipment. This overloads them and causes overheating.
  • Never install the unit or route wires where an airbag deploys.
  • If your vehicle has a factory backup camera required by regulations, keep that system working. Connecting it to this receiver needs an adaptor.
  • If you replace the fuse, use only the rating marked on the product.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Probable Cause What to Check
Clock, presets and Bluetooth pairings are lost every time I turn off the car Yellow is connected to a switched circuit instead of constant 12 V, or Yellow and Red are swapped With the key off, measure Yellow to ground: it must read about 12 V. Red must read 0 V with the key off and about 12 V in ACC.
The unit stays on with the key out, or the battery goes flat overnight Red is connected to constant 12 V, which also keeps Blue/white powering the amp Move Red: ACC (switched 12 V) to a circuit that reads 0 V with the key off.
The receiver is completely dead Blown 10 A fuse, poor ground, or no 12 V on Yellow or Red Check the fuse with a meter and replace it only with the rated value. Check that Black is bolted to bare metal. Measure about 12 V on Yellow and on Red with the key in ACC.
No sound and the screen shows AMP Error A speaker lead is shorted to the chassis or to another lead, or the speakers are below 4 Ω Disconnect the battery and check every speaker pair for shorts and loose strands. Tape the unused leads separately and confirm each speaker measures 4 to 8 Ω.
Thin, weak bass, or the sound seems to come from nowhere One speaker is wired with reversed polarity Confirm the solid-color wire goes to + and the black-striped wire goes to – on FL, FR, RL and RR.
A speaker plays from the wrong corner, or a rear speaker is silent Speaker pairs are swapped, or Preout is set to Subwoofer with a dual speaker setup Use Fader/Balance to identify each speaker. Check the color pairs against the diagram and set the fader to 0 when you use two speakers.
The external amplifier never turns on Blue/white is not connected, or it feeds a load above 300 mA With the key in ACC, measure about 12 V at the amp's remote terminal. If several devices share the lead, add a relay.
Amp or subwoofer is silent while the speakers on the receiver's own leads work Preout is set to the wrong output, the subwoofer is off, or an RCA cable is in the wrong jack With the source off, set Preout to Rear or Subwoofer, turn Subwoofer On, and check the cables at FRONT OUT and REAR/SUB OUT.
Video is blocked by a caution message even when parked Light green is not connected, or it is on the ground side of the parking brake switch Connect it to the power supply side of the switch. Then, with your foot on the brake, apply, release and re-apply the parking brake.
No camera image when I shift into reverse Back Camera Input is Off, R.C IN is loose, or Violet/white is on the wrong backup lamp lead Set Back Camera Input to On and reseat the RCA at R.C IN. Measure Violet/white: its voltage must change when you shift into REVERSE.
Camera image appears while driving forward, or the screen goes black in reverse Camera Polarity is wrong, or Back Camera Input is On with no camera installed Switch Camera Polarity between Battery and Ground. If no camera is fitted, set Back Camera Input to Off.
Image from the AUX video player is disturbed or has no picture A generic mini-jack cable with a different pin order, or the wrong video signal setting Use a proper mini-jack AV cable with white, red and yellow plugs. Turn AUX Input On and set the AUX Video Signal Setting to Auto or your player's system.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the color codes for the speaker wires on a Pioneer DMH-100BT stereo?
The speaker wires are white for front left, gray for front right, green for rear left and violet for rear right. Each solid-color wire is the positive (+) side. The matching wire with a black stripe (white/black, gray/black, green/black, violet/black) is the negative (–) side. Keep polarity the same on all four speakers so bass does not cancel. If you have only two speakers, do not connect anything to the unused pair and insulate each lead separately.

Which wire is the remote wire on a Pioneer radio?
On the DMH-100BT, the remote wire is the blue/white lead in the power cord. It outputs 12 V DC whenever the ignition is in ACC, even if the audio source is off. Connect it to an external amplifier's remote terminal, an auto-antenna relay or an antenna booster, with a maximum load of 300 mA. Don't confuse it with the Wired remote input jack on the rear panel. That jack is for a steering wheel control interface, not for turning on an amplifier.

Can I use 2 Ω speakers or a 2 Ω subwoofer on the speaker leads?
No, the speaker leads need speakers of 4 to 8 Ω. Speakers of 1 to 3 Ω must never be used on this unit. When you use all four channels, each speaker should also handle over 50 W maximum input. A lower impedance overloads the internal amplifier and can trigger the protection circuit and the AMP Error message. To drive a low-impedance subwoofer, connect an external amplifier to the REAR/SUB OUT RCA jacks and let the amp drive it.

What fuse does the DMH-100BT use, and how much current does it draw?
The power supply is protected by a 10 A fuse, and the receiver's maximum current consumption is 10.0 A. The unit is rated at 14.4 V DC and works from 10.8 V to 15.1 V. If you replace the fuse, use only the rating marked on the product. A larger fuse removes the protection meant to prevent wiring fires. If the replacement blows straight away, look for a short before you try again.

Can I connect the yellow wire directly to the car battery?
No. Connect Yellow to a circuit that has 12 V at all times, such as the factory radio harness or a fused circuit in the fuse block. A lead run directly to the battery passes through the firewall. There, engine vibration can wear through the insulation, and if it touches metal the resulting short can be dangerous. Also, never tap Yellow or Red to power other accessories, because that overloads the receiver's leads.

Should I choose the ”Without internal amp” or ”With internal amp” setup?
Choose Without internal amp if an external amplifier will drive your speakers from the RCA outputs. In that case the receiver's speaker leads are not used. Choose With internal amp if your speakers stay on the receiver's speaker leads and the amp only adds something, typically a subwoofer from REAR/SUB OUT. In both setups, the amp's remote terminal connects to the blue/white lead and its ground goes to the vehicle body with its own screw.

Is the subwoofer output stereo or mono?
The subwoofer output is mono. The REAR/SUB OUT jacks carry either rear-channel audio or a mono subwoofer signal, depending on the Preout setting, which you can change only while the source is off. With Subwoofer selected, you can set a low-pass filter of 80 Hz, 120 Hz or 160 Hz and switch the phase between Normal and Reverse. The maximum preout output level is 2.0 V, so set your amplifier's input gain to suit.

Can I bypass the parking brake wire to watch video while driving?
No. The light green lead must go to the power supply side of the parking brake switch. Tampering with or disabling the parking brake interlock can cause serious injury or death and may be illegal. Video on this screen must never be visible to the driver while the vehicle is moving. When the interlock is wired correctly, video plays once you park and apply the parking brake, and the rear view camera still works when you reverse.

Can I install the DMH-100BT in a vehicle without an ACC position?
No. The receiver needs a switched 12 V circuit from an ignition switch with an ACC position. Without one, the Red lead has nothing proper to connect to, and the unit is not designed for that installation. The vehicle must also have a 12 V battery with a negative ground. Using it on other systems, such as 24 V or positive ground, can cause fire or malfunction.

Can I connect my vehicle's factory backup camera to this receiver?
Sometimes, but it requires an adaptor sold separately, and not every vehicle can be connected. If your vehicle has a backup camera required by U.S. or Canadian regulations, the Pioneer receiver must show the same view as the factory camera. Your installation must not disable that system. For an aftermarket camera such as the ND-BC8, use one that outputs a mirror image and power it from an ACC-switched circuit.

What USB cable can I use to connect an Android phone?
Use a USB A to micro USB B cable, like the one supplied with the CD-MU200, or a USB A to USB-C cable, like the one supplied with the CD-CU50. The micro USB cable must not be longer than 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.), and the USB-C cable must not be longer than 4 m (13 ft. 1 in.). The port supplies up to 0.5 A, and connection through a USB hub is not supported. Always use a cable rather than plugging a device in directly, so nothing sticks out from the dash.

Can I use the illumination wire if my car doesn't have one, or leave it unconnected?
Yes, you can leave the orange/white lead unconnected, as long as you insulate it with tape. Without it, the receiver cannot tell when the headlights are on, so Dimmer Trigger set to Auto will not work. Instead, set Dimmer Trigger to Manual to switch day and night brightness yourself, or to Time to dim at set hours.
