Wiring Instructions

Before you start

The Pioneer DMH-1770NEX receiver is built for professional installation. If you are not comfortable working with vehicle wiring, airbags or dash panels, have a trained mobile electronics installer do the job. Check two things about the vehicle first. It must have a 12 V negative ground electrical system, and its ignition switch must have an ACC (accessory) position. If either is missing, do not install this unit.

If the vehicle already has a factory backup camera that meets U.S. or Canadian rear visibility rules, the new receiver has to show that same camera view. This usually needs a vehicle-specific adapter, sold separately. Talk to a professional installer before you remove the factory radio.

Choose the diagram tab that matches your job:

  • Power and Speakers: a basic install that uses the receiver's built-in amplifier.
  • Power amp: you are adding external amplifiers through the RCA outputs.
  • Camera and video: choose Rear camera for a backup camera, or AV video and rear display for an external video source or a rear-seat screen.
  • Complete: shows everything together.

Tools and materials: a digital multimeter, wire strippers, a crimp tool with insulated butt connectors or a vehicle-specific harness adapter, electrical tape, cable clamps and the supplied mounting screws. The sources don't give a wire gauge for extensions. If you have to extend a lead, use wire at least as heavy as the original lead. Never shorten the receiver's leads, because that can stop the built-in protection circuit (fuse holder, fuse resistor or filter) from working properly.

Before you touch any wiring, disconnect the negative (–) battery cable. This prevents short circuits while you work.

Step-by-step wiring

  1. Plan the mounting location. The unit mounts to the factory radio-mounting bracket with three screws on each side, using only the supplied 5 mm × 9 mm screws. Mount it within 0 to 60 degrees of horizontal and leave about 5 cm of free space behind it for cooling.
  2. Connect Black: ground first, to bare metal of the vehicle body. If you are also installing an external power amp, ground the amp with its own separate screw, never the same one.
  3. Connect Yellow: battery + to a circuit that has 12 V at all times. Do not run it straight to the battery terminal. Engine vibration can wear through its insulation where it passes into the engine compartment, and that causes a dangerous short.
  4. Connect Red: ACC (switched 12 V) to a circuit that only has 12 V when the key is in ACC or ON.
  5. Connect Orange/white: illumination to the lighting switch terminal so the screen can dim when the headlamps are on.
  6. Connect Light green: parking brake to the power supply side of the parking brake switch, not the ground side. Never bypass or tamper with this connection.
  7. If you have a rear camera, connect Violet/white: reverse signal to whichever of the two backup lamp wires changes voltage when the shifter is in REVERSE (R).
  8. Wire the four speakers, keeping the + and − leads correct on every channel. Use 4 to 8 Ω speakers rated over 50 W maximum input. With only two speakers, leave the unused speaker leads unconnected and tape each one separately.
  9. If you are using external amplifiers, run RCA cables from FRONT OUT, REAR OUT and/or SUB OUT. Connect Blue/white: system remote to the amp's remote terminal. This lead supplies 300 mA maximum at 12 V DC. If the amps drive all of your speakers, leave the receiver's speaker leads unused and taped.
  10. Connect Yellow/black: audio mute only to the mute lead of equipment that has a mute function. Otherwise, tape it and leave it free.
  11. Plug in the accessories:
    • the antenna to ANT
    • the rear camera's video output to Brown: rear view camera input (camera only)
    • an external video component to AUX IN, using a mini-jack AV cable
    • a rear-seat display to REAR MON
    • the SiriusXM tuner to SXM, using the supplied cable
    • a steering wheel adapter to Steering
  12. Connect the microphone with the unit off. Mount it on the sun visor, which must be in the up position, or on the steering column away from the wheel. Route the USB cable to a place where the phone can be secured.
  13. Insulate every unused lead. Secure all wiring with clamps or tape, and keep it clear of the steering column, shift lever, pedals, seat tracks, doors and hot surfaces.

Testing and start-up

Do a temporary test before you fasten the unit into the dash. Reconnect the negative battery cable, then check:

  • Key off: Yellow should read about 12 V to ground and Red should read about 0 V.
  • Key in ACC: Red and Blue/white should both read about 12 V.

The unit is rated at 14.4 V DC and accepts anywhere from 10.8 V to 15.1 V. It has a 10 A fuse. Next, turn the ignition off and press RESET with a pen tip. Reset is required before first use after installation.

Turn the key to ACC and confirm the following:

  • Every speaker plays. Use the fader and balance controls to check each channel on its own.
  • The radio receives stations.
  • Video is only available with the parking brake applied.
  • The screen switches to the camera image as soon as you shift into REVERSE (R). Turn on Back-up Camera Input in the camera settings first.
  • If you use a subwoofer, enable it under Cutoff in the audio settings.

Safety notes

  • Never tap into the receiver's power leads to feed other devices. You will exceed their current capacity and the leads will overheat.
  • Replace the fuse only with one of the rating marked on the unit.
  • Never use 1 to 3 Ω speakers on this receiver.
  • Never mount the unit, or any rear display, where it blocks the driver's view, interferes with an airbag deployment zone, or lets the driver watch video.
  • Do not open the unit. It contains high-voltage parts.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Probable Cause What to Check
Unit won't turn on at all Blown 10 A fuse, poor ground, or no 12 V on Yellow or Red Check the fuse. With the key in ACC, measure Yellow and Red to bare chassis: both should read about 12 V. Clean and tighten the Black ground screw.
Clock, presets and settings are lost every time I turn off the car Yellow is on a switched circuit, or Yellow and Red are swapped With the key off, Yellow must still read about 12 V and Red about 0 V. Move the leads to the correct circuits.
Car battery goes dead overnight Red is on a constant 12 V circuit, so the unit never fully shuts off With the key removed, measure Red. It should read 0 V. If it shows 12 V, move Red to a circuit that is only live in ACC.
Screen shows a caution message and video won't play Light green is not connected, is on the wrong side of the switch, or the parking brake is off Make sure Light green goes to the power supply side of the parking brake switch. Stop the car, apply the brake, release it and apply it again.
Screen doesn't switch to the camera when I shift into reverse Back-up Camera Input is off, the Brown RCA is loose, or Violet/white is on the wrong backup lamp wire Turn on Back-up Camera Input. Reseat the camera RCA in the Brown input. Check that Violet/white is on the backup lamp wire that changes voltage in REVERSE (R).
Black screen in reverse, and I have no camera Back-up Camera Input is set to on Turn Back-up Camera Input off in the camera settings.
Caution! AMP Overload message, or no sound from the speakers A shorted speaker lead, a bare lead touching metal, or speakers below 4 Ω Check every speaker pair for shorts or chafing and tape unused leads separately. Confirm each speaker is 4 to 8 Ω. Then turn off ACC, wait at least 9 seconds and turn it back on.
Thin, weak bass, or sound seems to come from the wrong place The + and − speaker leads are reversed on one or more speakers Check that White, Gray, Green and Violet go to + and that each matching black-striped wire goes to −.
External amplifier never turns on Blue/white is not connected, or the amp's ground is bad With ACC on, measure Blue/white at the amp's remote terminal: you should see about 12 V. Check that the amp has its own ground screw on bare metal.
Subwoofer is silent Subwoofer output is disabled, or the RCA cable is in the wrong jack Enable Subwoofer under Cutoff in the audio settings. Make sure the cable is in SUB OUT, not FRONT OUT or REAR OUT.
Screen stays bright at night, or never dims Orange/white is not on the lighting switch circuit, or Lighting Detect is off With the headlamps on, measure Orange/white: it should read about 12 V. Turn on Lighting Detect in the display settings.
Check Antenna, Check Tuner or Caution! USB Overcurrent message A loose antenna plug, a bad SiriusXM tuner connection, or a faulty USB device or cable Reseat the plug in ANT, reconnect the tuner at SXM and check the battery voltage. For USB, try a different cable, then cycle ACC off and on.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I install this receiver in a vehicle without an ACC position on the ignition switch?
No. This receiver needs an ACC (accessory) position or ACC circuit. Red: ACC (switched 12 V) is how the unit knows when to turn on and off. Without it, you would have to put Red on constant power, and the unit would never fully shut down and could drain the battery. If your ignition switch has no ACC position, choose a different installation solution or ask a professional installer for vehicle-specific options.

Why shouldn't I run the yellow lead directly to the battery?
Running the yellow lead straight to the battery risks a dangerous short circuit. The wire has to pass from the cabin into the engine compartment, and engine vibration can wear through its insulation where it touches metal. Connect Yellow: battery + instead to a circuit inside the vehicle that has 12 V at all times, such as the constant-power wire of the factory radio harness. Never shorten the lead, and never tap it to power other devices.

What fuse does the DMH-1770NEX use?
The receiver's power supply uses a 10 A fuse, and the unit's maximum current consumption is 10.0 A. If the fuse blows, replace it only with a fuse of the rating marked on the product, never a larger one. A fuse that keeps blowing points to a short in the wiring, such as a chafed power lead or a speaker lead touching metal. Find and fix that before you replace the fuse again.

Can I connect 2 Ω speakers or a 1 Ω subwoofer to the speaker leads?
No. The built-in amplifier is designed for 4 Ω loads and allows 4 to 8 Ω. You must never connect 1 to 3 Ω speakers, because they can overload the amplifier and trigger the AMP Overload protection or cause damage. Use speakers rated over 50 W maximum input. To drive a low-impedance subwoofer, use SUB OUT to feed an external amplifier rated for that load.

How powerful is the built-in amplifier?
The built-in amplifier is rated at 14 W RMS × 4 channels under the CTA2006 standard (4 Ω, 1 % THD+N), 22 W × 4 continuous (50 Hz to 15 kHz, 5 % THD, 4 Ω), and 50 W × 4 maximum. That is enough for factory or efficient aftermarket speakers. For more output, add external amplifiers on the RCA outputs. Their maximum preout level is 2.0 V, so set the amplifier gains to match.

Can I install it with only two speakers?
Yes. Connect the two speakers you have, usually the front pair, and leave the other speaker leads completely unconnected. Do not join them together or to anything else. Tape the end of each unused lead separately, because a bare speaker lead touching metal can cause a short circuit. Then set the front/rear fader to its center position, 0, so the full signal goes to the speakers you actually connected.

Can the blue/white lead turn on more than one amplifier?
Yes, but only if their combined draw stays within 300 mA at 12 V DC. That small current is all Blue/white: system remote can supply. Many amplifier remote inputs draw very little, but check the specifications for each amp. If the total could exceed the limit, or you also power an auto-antenna or booster from it, general good practice is to have Blue/white trigger a relay that switches the remote feed. Blue/white is live whenever ACC is on, even if the audio source is off.

What kind of camera can I connect to the brown input?
Connect only a reverse or mirror-image rear view camera with an RCA video output to the Brown: rear view camera input. Nothing else should go into this input. Pioneer recommends a camera that outputs a mirror-reversed image, or the picture may appear backwards. You can also flip the image with the Camera View setting. Violet/white must also be connected so the screen switches to the camera automatically when you shift into reverse.

Can I keep my factory backup camera?
Often yes, but usually only with a vehicle-specific adapter, sold separately, and not every vehicle can be connected. If your vehicle has a backup camera that complies with U.S. or Canadian rear visibility rules, the new receiver must display that same camera view. Do not install it in a way that disables the camera system. A professional installer can tell you which options exist for your vehicle.

Where can I mount a rear-seat display connected to REAR MON?
Mount it only where rear-seat passengers can see it and the driver cannot. The REAR MON output exists so rear passengers can watch video, and placing the screen within the driver's view is dangerous and may be illegal. In some areas, video visible inside a moving vehicle is restricted even for passengers, so check your local laws. The display needs an RCA video input jack.

Which USB cable do I need for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay?
Plug the phone into the supplied 1.5 m USB cable with a cable that suits your phone: a Lightning cable for iPhone, or a USB A to micro USB or USB A to USB-C cable for Android. Keep micro USB cables to 2 m or less and USB-C cables to 4 m or less, or the unit may not work properly. Do not use a USB hub. The port supplies up to 1.5 A for charging.

Do I need to connect the yellow/black mute lead?
Only if you have another device with an audio mute function that should silence the receiver, so connect it to that device's mute lead. If you don't have such equipment, leave Yellow/black: audio mute free of any connection and tape the end of it. Connecting it anywhere else could mute the audio unexpectedly or cause a short to the vehicle body.
